The Cross-Dressing Laws Map highlights the research of multiple historians who have contributed to our understanding of public cross-dressing and disguise laws. No doubt more laws will come to light as scholars continue to probe local histories of gender policing. One key benefit of the digital map is the ability to update, correct, and expand it when scholars find new information. If you have additions or corrections to this data, please contact me so that this map can be updated to reflect your contributions.

Many places in the U.S. still need a more thorough review of local laws and arrest records. The digitization of 19th-century codes of ordinances is making this research more feasible for students throughout the country. If you are working with students to undertake local history research in this direction, I encourage you to get in touch to discuss how your students’ research findings can be integrated into the map.
